Itinerary in brief

Day 1-2: Moremi Game Reserve and Khwai. Departure from Maun towards the Moremi Reserve. Exploration of the Khwai and Mogotho area, among giant acacia trees and abundant wildlife. Bush brunch and sunset safari along the river.
Day 3: Savuti and Mababe. Journey through the Mababe Depression towards Savuti. Discovery of ancient rock paintings and observation of the high animal concentration in one of Southern Africa's most fascinating locations.
Day 4: The Big Five Sanctuary. Return to the Moremi Game Reserve, a paradise for black and white rhinos and over 400 bird species. Evening transfer to Xaoo camp.
Day 5: Elephant Havens and the Delta. Visit to the "Elephant Havens" orphan elephant rehabilitation center. Proceed to Boro station for entry into the Okavango Delta aboard mokoros.
Day 6: Heart of the Okavango. Exploration of the inner delta by boat and mokoro. Walking safari on the islands, aquatic animal sightings, and an evening with traditional songs and dances around the fire.
Day 7: Return to Maun. Sunrise walk and final navigation back to Maun for the conclusion of the tour.

About the destination

As the main gateway to the Okavango Delta, Maun (mau-uunn) is Botswana’s primary tourism hub. With good accommodation and a reliably mad mix of bush pilots, tourists, campers, volunteers and luxury-safari-philes, it’s a decent-enough base for a day or two. That said, if your only business in Botswana involves staying in the lodges and tented camps of the delta, you may do little more than hang around the airport. No great loss: the town itself has little going for it – it’s strung out over kilometres with not much of a discernible centre – but some of the hotels and camps have riverside vantage points.
